Temba Bavuma, captain of South Africa's white-ball side and a key Test middle order bat, has been ruled out of the coming tour of England with an elbow injury.
Bavuma picked up the problem during the Proteas' recent Twenty20 campaign against India and is facing a two-month lay-off, ruling him out of the three-format visit.
Spinner Keshav Maharaj will take the reins for the three-match one-day series which kicks off the trip on July 19, with batter David Miller skippering the three T20s. Opener Dean Elgar remains in charge of the Test team.
Star pace bowler Kagiso Rabada will miss the 50-over leg of the tour in a bid to manage his workload, while there is a T20 recall for former Kolpak player Rilee Roussow, currently playing for Somerset on an overseas deal. Roussouw last played for his country in 2016.
Gerald Coetzee, 21, has also been handed a first international call-up as part of the T20 squad.
