Selecting the best cleanser for your skin type is crucial to having happy, healthy skin. But how do you know which one is right for you?
According to Charlotte Messam from Biossance, many of us have a texture preference with the type of cleanser we use. "(This) is totally fine, however choosing a cleanser that is formulated to work for your skin type will mean you start your skin preparation in the best way possible," she says.
"If you have predominantly dry or sensitive skin opt for a cream, jelly or oil cleanser. These cleansers contain additional oils which will nourish and leave skin hydrated rather than stripping any moisture away. Your skin should feel comfortable after cleansing, any sign of tightness is a sign that your skin is being dehydrated."
According to Charlotte, combination skin types can use a mixture of cleansers, depending on preference. "I would suggest starting with an oil or balm cleanser to really break down dirt and make-up and then follow with a gel to leave the skin feeling fresh," she says. "A go-to foaming cleanser is the Biossance Squalane + Amino Aloe Gel Cleanser. It's a gentle and soothing gel, with a non-stripping formulation with squalane and aloe vera."
Charlotte explains that sugarcane-derived squalane mimics the body's natural hydrating oils to provide weightless moisture, delivering active ingredients deep into the skin and preventing overdrying. "This is sustainable super-hydrating molecule which is great to look out for in products," she says.
Meanwhile, oily skin types should use gel cleansers that foam up and leave the skin feeling fresh and clean. Carlottle notes that even if you have oily skin, it doesn't mean you need to stay away from oil cleansers, as oil acts to break down any excess oil on the skin surface.
"If you are going to choose an oil cleanser and you have oily skin, choose one which is lightweight and non-comedogenic that will not clog your pores."
