To celebrate Woolworths' milestone of 100 million pieces of free fruit being given to kids in store, primary schools and early learning centres across Sydney can now apply for the chance to receive free fruit for each of their students for a day.
The program is open to schools across Campbelltown, Liverpool, St George, Sutherland, Wollondilly, Camden and Fairfield.
Woolworths estimates more than 14,000 tonnes of free fruit have been eaten by kids since the program launched - the equivalent to filling more than six Olympic sized swimming pools.
The free fruit for schools is aimed at helping get even more fruit into students' diets as 39 per cent of kids in NSW aged 5 to 15 are not eating the daily recommended intake of fruit.
Woolworths NSW store manager Kelly Manning said all schools could apply.
"As a way to celebrate our milestone of 100 million pieces of fruit to kids, we want to further encourage healthy eating habits and help students get their daily recommended intake of fruit," she said.
"We encourage all schools and early learning centres in Sydney to apply for their chance to receive free fruit for each student for a day.
"Parents and kids are also encouraged to pick up a free piece of fruit the next time they visit us in store."
Following Woolworths' Australian-first sourcing policy, 100 per cent of the fruit given away is from local suppliers, like Mackay Bananas in Queensland and Montague Apples in Victoria.
Tony Alcock, a second generation Alcock Bananas grower, said he loved being a part of the program.
"As a family-owned, Aussie business, we're all about taking positive steps to ensure kids build a love for fruit," he said.
"We're thrilled to know so many of our bananas have brought tasty nutrition to many kids over the last five years through Woolworths Free Fruit for Kids program."
Applications to receive free fruit for students are now open.
Up to 100 primary schools or early learning centres will be given enough fruit to hand out to each student for one day.
