Jarome Luai says he feels ready for State of Origin after Nathan Cleary became the latest man to endorse his halves partner's NSW credentials.
Luai has arguably been the form player of the opening five rounds of the competition, setting up nine tries in the Panthers' undefeated start.
His performances have even prompted Kangaroos coach Mal Meninga to claim Luai would be his first-choice No.6 if he was in charge of NSW.
Luai was a surprise selection in last year's extended Blues' squad.
While he didn't get a game in the series it lit a fire in him to make Origin a realistic goal for 2021.
"I took so much out of that, and it was just one of the things that made me feel like I can get a lot better," Luai told AAP.
"Confidence was a big thing, I didn't really see myself with those boys.
"So to be selected and be recognised for having a good year, just gave me a lot of belief that Origin should be one of my goals because it never was before.
"If I get that opportunity ... I feel like I'm ready. I have a long way to go but it would be pretty cool.
"I'd give it my best shot, no doubt."
Cody Walker and Jack Wighton remain favourites in front of Luai for Origin I in Melbourne on June 9, but the Samoa international is quickly closing the gap.
He outplayed Wighton in the Panthers' 30-10 win over Canberra on Friday, and has a crucial round-11 clash against Walker's South Sydney a week before Origin sides are named.
Luai does offer what the other two can't: a legitimate club combination with NSW halfback Cleary.
Their partnership has helped Penrith win 28 of their 30 games together in the NRL.
"I don't know if I bring the best out of him but he definitely brings the best out of me," Luai said.
The feeling is mutual.
"I always say it, I love playing with Romey," Cleary said.
"Some of the stuff he does on the field is unbelievable, he's that X-factor and I just get him the ball when he needs it and try to be that calming presence."
Ivan Cleary on Friday agreed with the call for the 24-year-old Luai to be selected for the Blues, noting his rapid improvement since questions were asked about his role at Penrith last June.
After playing together since age 15, Nathan Cleary has no doubt Luai was ready to step up to the Origin arena alongside him.
"Did you see him play (against Canberra)?" Cleary said.
"He's never overawed by any occasion, he's full of confidence, he's definitely ready.
I'd love to play alongside Romey, but there's a lot of footy to be played between now and then.
"But he'd definitely rise to the occasion."
