Sydney Roosters beat Wests Tigers at NRL trial match at Kirkham Oval

NRL action came to Elderslie at the weekend with a trial clash between local club Wests Tigers and competition heavyweights Sydney Roosters.

Fans flocked to Kirkham Oval to watch the casual trial match, which saw both clubs blood some young, untested players.

The game ended in victory for the visitors, with the Tricolours walking away 28-22 winners.

Things didn't go so well for young cub Billy Stapleton, who reportedly broke his jaw during the match.

Coach Michael Maguire told NRL media he was impressed with the performance of his team, despite the loss.

"It was good having players back playing footy. We had a fair range of kids from our younger grades to our men and I thought they did well," Maguire said after the match.

"It was definitely a first run. It was good to get the rust out - a lot haven't played for 12 months - and now I'm looking forward to next weekend which is the real trial."

New recruits Daine Laurie and Tuki Simpkins particularly caught Madge's eye, the latter opening the 2021 scoring for the club.

Jacob Liddle and Jake Simpkin shared the hooker role for the trial, as the Wests Tigers look to replace last year's gun loan Harry Grant, and will again battle it out for starting number 9 honours in the club's upcoming trial against the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles.

The trial match was preceded by a Jersey Flegg game and a Women's NRL clash earlier in the afternoon.

The next trial match will be held at Leichhardt Oval this Sunday.
