Macarthur FC open A-League with derby against Wanderers

Macarthur FC captain Mark Milligan said a brand-new derby showdown against the Western Sydney Wanderers was the "ideal way" to kick-off their debut season.

The Bulls will be part of an historic opening day double header as the A-League and W-League seasons commence on December 27 at Bankwest Stadium.

Ante Milicic's team will play their opening home game against the Central Coast Mariners at Campbelltown Stadium on January 3. It kick-starts a busy period for the A-League newcomers with five games in 14-days in January.

Their first derby against Sydney FC will be on January 31 at the Bullpen.

The Bulls, who will train out of Fairfield Showground, finish their 26-round debut campaign against Western United at home on May 29.

"After the year that 2020 has been, we are more ready than ever to get back on to the pitch and into the stadium and I know that we're hearing from members every day about how excited they are that football is back for summer," Milligan said.

FFA's head of leagues Greg O'Rourke said it has been one of the "most challenging fixture processes" they have been involved in because of the continually evolving restrictions.

"...But our priority has always been bringing the best football to fans in the safest way, working with all our stakeholders to do so," he said.

"We've always had an ambition to align to the A-League and W-League seasons, so to be able to do that this year is a big step forward. The later than usual season start also means that we have more alignment with the rest of the game."
