You've heard the saying about not all super-heroes wearing capes. Well, Tyron Waugh personifies that.
Normally a mild-mannered library employee in the north-west coast of Tasmania, Tyron turned super-hero in barely the blink of an eye.
There was a confluence of factors at play, as Meg Powell wrote in The Advocate, and they're worth explaining.
It was Book Week, Tyron was dressed (as you would be) in his Incredible Hulk clobber, and a colleague needed a break so he stepped away from his usual work station.
But rather than stay on the sidelines when he learnt about a man having a medical episode on a street nearby, Tyron leapt into action. And wouldn't you know it? Only a week before he'd done a first-aid refresher course.
With defibrillator in hand, AND the knowledge of how to properly use it, he saved the 57-year-old man's life.
"There was another man doing CPR, but as soon as I got there with the defibrillator I took over. I remember throwing the wig on the ground."
And as if that quote isn't enough to make you smile, how about this from paramedic ambulance officer Ray Johnson: "We could see from a distance someone was administering CPR. As we got closer I could see that it was the Hulk."
Of course, it was!
And while we're acknowledging the people who make our communities so fantastic, a shout out to all the finalists in the Victorian Australian of The Year Awards. They'll be presented tonight and you can watch the livestream right here from 6.30pm local time.
The 17 Victorians in the running to be named the state's Local Hero, Young Australian of the Year, Senior Australian or Australian of the Year for 2021 include a 92-year-old breaking new ground in the study of dementia, two mums helping parents of kids with disabilities and a neurologist whose invention translates thought to action for paralysed patients.
