Fashion students and a Macarthur community group have worked together to make life a little easier for local breast cancer patients.

Students studying fashion at Macquarie Fields TAFE have created more than 80 breast care cushions for the Zonta Club of Macarthur.

Members of Zonta, a community group which aims to advance and empower women across the globe, will distribute the specially-made cushions to women undergoing breast cancer treatment in places like Campbelltown and Liverpool hospitals.

TAFE fashion teacher Rosario Bugge said the partnership was a great opportunity to give the students some experience and give back to the community.

"We're very proud to be part of such an important project for the Zonta Club of Macarthur," she said.

"Having to deal with cancer treatment is never easy and our students enjoy being able to create beautiful cushions that are distributed to breast care nurses across NSW.

"The project plays an important part of their course work as it is an opportunity for the students to work to a brief for a client, gain some great experience not only in sewing, but also production, and team work."

The partnership has been ongoing for 16 years, and Zonta club president Carol Longworth said she hoped to see it continue long into the future.

She said she was honoured to be involved with the project.

"We're so grateful that the fashion students do this for us," the Bringelly resident said.

"The cushions were designed by a Zonta Club member, Ann Selle, many years ago and are made of a special fabric that's actually soothing for breast cancer patients.

"I haven't had breast cancer myself, but I've heard that the wounds can be quite painful if your arms or other things bump against them, so these cushions act like a bit of a buffer."

Ms Longworth said it brought her grate pride to see these cushions distributed.

"When they receive their cushions, these breast cancer patients know that there are strangers out there that care about the outcome of their procedures," she said.

The Zonta Club will welcome Ms Selle to their next meeting on July 24 at Wests Leagues Leumeah. Their next breast cushion assembly workshop will be held on July 27. Details: Email macarthur@zontadistrict24.org.
