Swift work from Macarthur firefighters - with a little help from neighbours - helped contain a fire outside a Picton home this morning.

Picton and Camden Fire and Rescue NSW (FRSW) crews were called to a Coull Street home about 8.30am on Wednesday, June 12.

Picton FRNSW's Chris Taylor said the blaze started in an Otto bin next to the house. He said ash from a fire in the bin ignited the blaze.

"When we arrived, the neighbours had grabbed their garden hoses and were trying to put the fire out," he said.

Mr Taylor said crews quickly extinguished the blaze before it spread.

"Fortunately it only caused superficial damage to the [house's] gutters and the outside area," he said.

"No-one was home at the time."
