A Melbourne teenager who rose to fame for smashing an egg on an ultra-conservative independent Queensland senator's head says the crack has united people.
More than a week after Will Connolly, 17, hit Senator Fraser Anning's head with an egg at a political event in Melbourne, he has admitted it wasn't wise but says it brought people together.
"There is no reason to physically attack anyone," Connolly told Ten's The Project on Monday night.
"I understand what I did was not the right thing to do however this egg has united people and money has been raised, tens of thousands of dollars, for those victims."
Connolly, dubbed "Egg Boy", was angered by the independent Queensland senator who said Muslim immigration contributed to the 50 deaths in the Christchurch massacres.
He went to Senator Anning's political event on March 16, hoping to forgive him for his words in the wake of the terrorist attack, and listened for an hour before he cracked.
About $80,000 has been raised through a crowdfunding campaign for Connolly but he's going to donate "every cent" to the victims of the Christchurch massacre.
"I didn't think this was going to blow up. It's blown up completely out of proportion, to the point where it is kind of embarrassing because too much attention is brought away from the real victims. We should be focusing on them," the schoolboy urged.
He's also giving up the eggs for now in a bid to lose the nickname which first stuck after he began eating them hard-boiled in his school lunch before the hit.
"I am off the eggs now," he said, with a smile.
