The East Campbelltown Eagles have started 2019 in style with a 30-22 win over the Moorebank Rams on Saturday.

The Eagles began their NSWRL Sydney Shield Premiership title defence with a solid win at Hammondville Oval.

East Campbelltown scored first when a Sean Connor kick led to Shannon Gallant diving over.

Connor successfully converted to take the Eagles to a 6-0 lead.

However, in wet conditions, the young Rams side responded swiftly with a converted try to level the game at 6-all.

East Campbelltown's second try came through Theo Leato. Connor nailed the conversion to take his side to a 12-6 lead.

Just before half time, Moorebank hit back to go into the sheds down 12-10.

Moorebank scored early in the second half to take a 16-12 advantage.

However, that joy was short lived as the Eagles opened up the game with tries to Grant Lahey and Aaron Teariki.

Connor converted both tries as the Eagles took a handy 24-16 lead.

Moorebank again rallied to score to bring the deficit back to 24-22, but Lahey scored his second try with eight minutes left to put the match beyond doubt.

The Eagles held on for a 30-22 win

Best for the Eagles were Grant Lahey, Mason Talolua and Shannon Gallant while Sean Connor received the man of the match award and Aaron Teariki was named players' player.

East Campbelltown will take on the Asquith Magpies at Ruse's Worrell Park this Sunday at 2.30pm.
