Camden Public School students and principal shave heads for a cure

Three kids and one principal have raised almost $4000 for cancer research - and they're not done yet.

James O'Brien, Georgia Newman, Jacob Wright and Camden Public School principal Jason Hawker shaved their heads as part of the World's Greatest Shave campaign on Friday.

Several hairdressers - Dani Wade of Vita 5 CPR, Renee Butler of Camden Highlights and Eilish Delaney - visited the school to free the foursome of their locks while other students took part in a 'crazy hair day' and raised $1500.

The families of both James and Jacob have felt the effects of cancer, which is why the two youngsters decided to shave their heads this year.

"My grandmother, grandfather and auntie all died of different kinds of cancer," Jacob said.

"I would like to raise money to go towards treatment, because I know the pain of watching someone close to me suffer and this is a pain I do not wish on anyone."

James said his family had been "hit by the terrible disease" many times.

"I have two cousins undergoing treatment, which without the aid of funds and research would not be possible," he said. "Cancer is non-biased and it can affect anyone."

Georgia shaved her head to encourage others to donate funds.

"My loss of hair is similar to whose who lose their hair due to the medication that treats the cancer," she said.

"I am encouraging everyone to get on board and donate to the World's Greatest Shave campaign."

Mr Hawker said he was honoured the school was having a positive impact on fundraising this year.

"A strong community which works together to support families and friends in need and raise money to find better treatments and cures is vital," he said.

"I am privileged to be part of one such school community.

"Everyone has stories of family and friends who have been touched by this illness, including our community."

The students and principal have already raised $2400 as the 'Camden Sixers' team on the Leukaemia Foundation's fundraising website. They are aiming to raise $3000 on the website.
