Couple calls time on service to Wollondilly

Helen and Joe Hanger have clocked up countless hours behind the wheel to help the Wollondilly community.

The Hangers, of Picton, have been long-time Meals on Wheels volunteers, making vital food deliveries to residents across the shire.

Helen has volunteered for 45 years while Joe has been part of the program for more than three decades.

It is estimated the pair has driven thousands of hours during their combined 76 years of service.

Now, the couple has hit the brakes and announced their retirement from the service due to ongoing health reasons.

Helen said she would miss the "community spirit" at Wollondilly Meals on Wheels.

"We have loved working with Meals on Wheels and always enjoyed spending time with our clients," she said.

"We are sad to leave volunteering but are reluctantly retiring as know as we know it is the right time."

Helen said the couple - who have been married for 62 years - had enjoyed the opportunity to go above and beyond when helping residents.

"We love to do the little things, like post a letter or just spend time having a cuppa and a chat," she said.

Wollondilly Support and Community Care runs the shire's Meals on Wheels program.

The organisation held a farewell event for the Hangers earlier this month.

Wollondilly Support and Community Care staff and board members thanked thanked Helen and Joe for their years of great service.
