Mount-Annan trainer boxer Ebanie Bridges is set to fight on Australia’s big stage next month – and she can’t wait.
Bridges will take on Philippines opponent Mahiecka Pareno in a bantam weight (53.5kg and under) fight at Sydney’s Hordern Pavilion on February 8.
The pair will fight at the Star of the Ring event as an under card to the main bout, NRL star Paul Gallen versus John Hopoate.
Bridges’ fight will be televised on Foxtel and the 32-year-old said she was “pumped” for the opportunity.
“I am being thrown in the deep end as there is more pressure being on the big stage in front of a big crowd.
“But I will embrace that. It’s not often that you get this kind of opportunity, especially for a newcomer.
“I am feeling confident and ready for the big show.”
Bridges said she expected a tough challenge from Pareno.
“She’s not as experienced as other fighters, but it should be a quality fight,” she said.
Bridges was set to make her professional debut last November in Wollongong against Thai fighter Rungnapha Kaewrachang.
However, the fight was cancelled due to Kaewrachang experiencing fighting clearance issues.
Bridges instead fought fellow NSW competitor Bianca Elmir in an exhibition fight, but it wasn’t recognised as a professional bout.
Bridges said it was a disappointing situation but she looked forward to notching up her pro debut bout next month.
“This fight has been such a long time coming – I can’t wait to hit my opponent,” she said.
Bridges, who is nicknamed “The Blonde Bomber”, took up boxing more than two years ago after a previous background in bodybuilding.
She has trained for the past year under the guidance of Anthony Redward, who also coaches well-known Macarthur boxer Tommy Browne.
She regularly spars at Grange High Performance Smeaton Grange and does conditioning training at Ethos Performance in Rhodes.
Bridges said Redward’s coaching style complemented her aggressive style in the ring.
"I've always been aggressive, but it's become effective aggression under Anthony's coaching,” she said.
