Macarthur soccer fans can enjoy a taste of A-League action next month.
Campbelltown Stadium will host a Hyundai A-League contest between the Wellington Phoenix and Sydney FC on February 23.
It will be a return visit for both teams to Macarthur.
Sydney FC played an A-League game at Campbelltown Stadium in 2012 while the Phoenix played Football Federation Association Cup matches at the ground in 2016 and 2017.
Campbelltown mayor George Brticevic said he was thrilled for Macarthur host the Phoenix and Sydney FC.
“Wellington choosing our stadium as its preferred ground for this match is proof that our venue has what it takes to be a permanent home for an A-League team,” he said.
The FFA gave the green light in December for Macarthur South West United to become an A-League club.
The new team will join Australia’s premier soccer competition in the 2020/21 season.
Cr Brticevic was a driving force behind the Macarthur South West United bid and said it was a terrific result for the region.
“I am elated, a great amount of hard work by a lot of people has paid off,” he said.
“Our bid has gone from strength to strength and shows people are very passionate about the sport here.”
Cr Brticevic said the Phoenix versus Sydney FC contest was a chance to promote the A-League across the region.
“The level of support and the strong football fan base that is evident in our city is one of the key reasons the venue was selected for this match,” he said.
Tickets are on sale now. Prices start from $7.50 for children and $15 for adults.
