Nearly 6000 spectators were treated to the Usain Bolt show at Campbelltown Sports Stadium on Friday night.
All eyes were on the sprinter-turned-soccer player as he took the field for the Central Coast Mariners in their pre-season trial match against Macarthur South West United.
Bolt scored two goals as the Mariners secured a 4-0 win over the local side.
Bolt had missed out on several scoring chances in the first half but he made up for lost time after half time.
The 32-year-old scored two goals in the space of 12 minutes to spark a loud roar from the Campbelltown faithful.
A beautiful pass from teammate Ross McCormack set up Bolt to score his first goal through a sweet left-foot strike which beat the goalkeeper in the 57th minute.
Bolt high-fived with teammates before breaking out his famous “Lightning Bolt” celebration.
Twelve minutes later, a shocking mix-up between Macarthur South West defenders led to the ball falling at Bolt’s feet and he trickled home his second goal.
The goal helped Mariners take a 4-0 advantage.
The Bolt show was over after 75 minutes when he was substituted from the ground.
Afterwards, Bolt told Fox Sports that it was a “good feeling” to score two goals.
“I’m happy to come here and show the world I’m improving,” he said.
“I’m keen to be a Mariner, to play my best and get into the team [for the upcoming A-League season].”
Earlier, Bolt didn’t take long to get involved in the game as he missed out on a couple of scoring opportunities in the opening minutes.
However, the Mariners were the first team to score when a lovely Tommy Oar cross set up a Ross McCormack goal in the seventh minute.
Bolt was again in the spotlight eight minutes later when he copped a boot to the groin following a heavy collision.
He remained on the ground for more than a minute and received a generous round of applause when he got back up.
Bolt had a golden opportunity to score in the 23rd minute. He lost possession, regained the ball, took the goalkeeper on but couldn’t beat the keeper’s gloves.
Macarthur South West United looked to build momentum and nearly hit back four minutes later when Glen Trifiro’s long-range shot just skimmed the top of the net.
Bolt missed out on two further opportunities before teammate Jordan Murray found the back of the net to give Central Coast a 2-0 lead.
That’s how the score remained at half time and there was a loud cheer from the crowd when Bolt re-emerged on to the field for the second half.
A beautiful cross in the 47th minute set up an opportunity for Bolt to score but the ball zipped past his boot.
Bolt looked set to score again in the 55th minute when McCormack chipped the ball towards the eight-time Olympian, but the ball just missed his foot.
However, Bolt scored his first goal just two minutes later on his way to scoring a double.
