Thirlmere author Stephen Gard is fascinated by everything about the Old Hume Highway.

Mr Gard released a self-publicised book last year, Once Upon A Hume, which focused on the highway’s history and shared the stories of great characters who had taken the road.

Now, the sequel has hit the shelves.

Mr Gard said he was thrilled to release Once Upon A Hume: Volume Two this month after receiving positive public feedback about the first book.

“The first volume was very well received in Wollondilly and beyond,” he said.

“Feedback was enthusiastic, sales were steady and I had wonderful support from local businesses who stocked copies.

“The Once Upon a Hume series is great fun to research and write.”

Mr Gard said interesting people had been “Hume dwellers” during the highway’s history.

”Strange and remarkable things have occurred along that thoroughfare since it began as a track straggling through the hinterland,” he said.

One of Mr Gard’s favourite stories involved the well-known church bells in Camden.

“There was an attempt decades ago to silence the bells in St John’s Church because they disturbed the sleep of some worthy Camden citizens,” he said.

The book is $25 and is available from the Stephen Gard website.
