Macarthur swim schools are offering free swimming lessons for children under five in an effort to prevent drowning deaths.

Macarthur Learning to Swim, Jump! Swim Schools Campbelltown and Kingswim Macarthur Square will offer the free lessons throughout national Learn2Swim Week from October 2 to October 9.

Jump! Swim School Campbelltown owner Erin McMullan said the free lessons were a good chance to expose children to water and have some fun.

“Water safety education is all about teaching the whole family,” she said.

“Lessons focus on teaching children to enjoy the water environment and have fun while they are learning about buoyancy and mobility.

“Parents are always involved so they learn about what their children’s capabilities in the water are.”

Poolwerx, the company behind the week-long event, chief executive John O’Brien urged parents to take advantage of the free swimming lessons for their under-fives.

“Last year there were tragically 29 drowning deaths in children aged 0 to four years, with three quarters of these deaths resulting from a fall into the water,” he said.

“That is why it is so important to familiarise kids with water at an early age and swimming lessons can provide under-fives with the lifesaving skills they need to know to get themselves out of trouble.”

Kids Alive - Do the Five and program ambassador Laurie Lawrence said local swim schools were once again showing they were at the forefront of water safety awareness in young children.

“Learn2Swim Week has been running for four years now and each year we get more and more swim schools participating,” Laurie said.

“Macarrthur swim schools are helping us to reach our goal of zero drownings in under-fives and I encourage all parents with children under five to take advantage of this fantastic opportunity.”
