Macarthur basketball fans will get a chance to watch some of the state’s best young players this weekend.

The Minto Indoor Sports Centre will host the Spalding Waratah Junior League State Cup on Saturday, August 11 and Sunday, August 12.

Two age groups will compete – the under-16s and under-18s.

The Macarthur Heat under-16s basketball team will take to the Minto courts for three pool games.

The Heat will face Newcastle Hunters, Moss Vale Magic and Sydney Comets.

If successful, Macarthur will progress to the finals series.

Heat coach Rustum Isaacs said he expected a tough challenge in the pool games.

“We don’t expect it to be easy but we need to win,” he said.

“We are proud to play at Minto and hope to get a home crowd advantage.

“The boys are so pumped to play at Minto.”

These guys are the best bunch of boys that I’ve ever coached.

The Heat qualified for the state cup after finishing top three in the Waratah Junior League Metro under-16s division two competition.

The Macarthur side will head into the tournament full of confidence after winning the division two grand final last Sunday.

The Heat secured a 74-60 win over the Sutherland Sharks at Penrith Valley Regional Sports Centre.

Isaacs said it was the first time a Macarthur Heat side had won the division two title.

“These guys are the best bunch of boys that I’ve ever coached,” he said.

“It was a very pleasing performance [against Sutherland].

“Our side is very well drilled and they kept their composure on the day.”

The state cup will consist of the top teams from the division two metro league and division one teams from the eastern, northern, southern and western NSW junior leagues.

The Minto Indoor Sports Stadium is located at 9 Redfern Road, Minto.
