Wollondilly residents now have a new place in the shire where they can easily recycle their cans and get cash back.

A Return and Earn machine has been installed at Bargo Sports Club.

The container deposit scheme allows residents to recycle their discarded plastic or glass bottles and cans and get a refund.

Locals can use the machine from today and its the first machine to be installed in the southern end of the shire.

Bargo Sports Club staff said on Facebook that the machine was “a brilliant idea from a committee member [that had] come to fruition and will serve our community well”.

Wollondilly MP Jai Rowell was pleased another machine had been installed.

“Return and Earn is the largest litter reduction initiative to be introduced in NSW, and now there are more collection points for people to be involved,” Mr Rowell said.

“There has been widespread community support for Return and Earn, with over 300 million containers returned across the state since December 1.”

The government partnered with supermarket giant Woolworths to deliver the scheme.

Previously, residents had to travel to the Caltex petrol station at Wallacia or Prime Service Station in Silverdale to recycle their containers.

Otherwise they had to travel out of the shire to Mittagong, Camden, Spring Farm, Campbelltown and Ingleburn’s Woolworths reverse recycling machines.

There is also an over-the-counter collection point at Vinnies in Picton.

Wollondilly councillor Michael Banasik previously campaigned to have machines installed in the shire and said it was “great news” to see one at Bargo Sports Club.

The scheme started on December 1 and aims to halve the number of bottles and cans thrown away in parks, beaches and waterways.

Most drink containers between 150ml and three litres are eligible for the 10c refund.

Containers should be intact (not crushed or broken) and have a readable barcode to be eligible.

People will be able to choose to donate their refund directly to charities, receive a docket redeemable for cash or an electronic transfer using PayPal at the machines.

Bargo Sports Club is located at 3580 Remembrance Driveway, Bargo.
