Rosemeadow multipurpose courts now in operation

The next Ben Simmons or Tim Cahill might come from Rosemeadow, with the opening of a new sporting facility.

Just over a year after Campbelltown mayor George Brticevic promised to deliver a multipurpose sports court at the site of the rundown tennis courts on Cleopatra Drive, the new facility is up and running.

The site now features two basketball courts and two futsal grounds, LED lighting, some seating and a water bubbler.

There are also improved parking facilities.

Cr Brticevic praised council staff for delivering a top-of-the-line community sporting park.

“Council staff have done a fantastic job with this,” he said.

“Just over a year ago these were four dilapidated tennis courts and look at them now.

“It gives me such a warm feeling and a buzz to see the kids coming down here.”

Cr Brticevic said he hoped more facilities of a similar nature could be constructed elsewhere in Campbelltown.

“I’d like to see them in Ruse, Eschol Park, Raby, Kearns, Minto, Bow Bowing – just about every suburb,” he said.

“I’d like to see kids be able to just walk to a facility like this.

“Not every kid can afford sports registration, of boots, uniforms and travel required for sporting clubs.

“In terms of health and activity, courts like this change things and neighbourhood kisd are going to see that.”

Cr Brticevic has fond memories of growing up in the 90s – the “Michael Jordan era” – and shooting hoops with his brothers and friends at local courts.

“I guess we’ve lost a bit of that, and this can hopefully bring it back,” he said.

“I came down here on Monday night just to have a look and the place was buzzing with families, dads and sons, brothers and uncles, siblings.

“The car park was full of cars with P plates on them.

“This court is going to change this area, bring it together, and I want to do more of that.”

Cr Brticevic said a community event would be held on Friday, March 16 to officially launch the new courts.

The event will run from 6pm-9pm and feature special guests, food, an obstacle course, jumping castle and more.

More details will be released closer to the date.
