Quick fix for burst water main near Camden Uniting Church | photos

A burst water main on John Street caused a spectacular scene in Camden yesterday morning, as temperatures began a steady rise.

The main broke through the pathway near Camden Uniting church, but the matter was addressed within hours, a Sydney Water spokeswoman said.

“Sydney Water crews responded to a water main break on John Street, Camden on Sunday morning,” she said.

“We were notified at 7.15am and crews were on site by 9 am.”

Stunning images captured by local photographer Neil Loomes of Imageology Photography reveal the huge spray the spouting water caused across the street.

The street was briefly closed off as emergency service crews attended.

“Our first priority was to isolate the system to stop water flowing. Crews then repaired the main, and repairs were completed by 8pm yesterday,” she said.

“We brought in a water tanker to maintain supply to a restaurant, one of two properties impacted by the break.

“Sydney Water apologises for the inconvenience.”

The spokeswoman said a variety of factors could cause a water main to break.

“Leaks and breaks happen for a number of reasons – ground movement, climatic conditions, pipe material, how it was laid, traffic vibration and even tree roots can all contribute to a main breaking,” she said.

“We don’t know yet what has caused this break, but our team will inspect the broken section and investigate the cause now that we have repaired the main.

“If we find the main to be in poor condition, it will be replaced.”
