The Oxley Street car park will finally open next week in time for Light Up Camden celebrations.

Camden Council spent $3 million on the multi-storey car park built by Zauner Constructions.

Camden mayor Lara Symkowiak said she was delighted the works would finally be finished in time for the festive season, although she could not provide an exact opening date.

“It’s the first decked car park for Camden and it has been talked about for decades,” she said.

“It was important that the council invested in the town centre and provided parking close to local businesses.”

Cr Symkowiak said the council had gone to great lengths to ensure the car park was sympathetic to the area’s heritage surroundings.

“It’s not just concrete, there is the brick work and the green climbing walls as well,” she said.

“We have tried to make it as nice as a car park can be.”

Cr Symkowiak said businesses were also set to benefit from the car park’s opening.

“We had a lot of feedback from local business owners saying they needed more parking in Camden,” she said.

“With the convenience of shopping centres like Oran Park and Narellan Town Centre, it was important for council to build the car park close to Camden’s retail hub.

“The Civic Centre will also benefit from the car park as it will allow it to host bigger functions and shows.”

Cr Symkowiak said the car park was not the overall solution to Camden’s parking issues.

“It’s a good first step,” she said.

“As the area grows there may be more options.”

The car park was expected to be complete in September, however wet weather delayed construction.
