Two young hockey players shone at the under-13s State Indoor Hockey Championships in Orange recently.

Brayden Sutherland and Abbie Hamilton represented Metro South West at the tournament and were named Hockey NSW development players following their impressive performances.

Harrington Park resident Abbie, 11, said the tournament was another step towards achieving her ultimate goal.

“I would love to keep playing hockey forever and play at the Olympics one day,” the Harrington Park Hockey Club fullback said.

“Being named a development player has made me more determined to keep playing and never give up.”

For Brayden, 10, the tournament was not only a chance to show he could match it with the best, but it was also an opportunity to test himself against older players.

Being selected as a development player was the icing on the cake.

“It means I have been noticed by selectors as an upcoming talented player, and if I continue to play well I could make the state sides when I am old enough,” the Harrington Park striker said.

“I am very proud that I was recognised when I'm only 10 years old and most of the other players were 12 and 13.”

Despite his age, the world of hockey has already opened many doors for the Elderslie Public School student.

“I’ve already played hockey in the USA twice and we travel a lot around Australia,” he said.

“It’s also lots of fun and I’ve made lots of friends.”

Abbie, a St Paul’s Camden student, said she had he relatives to thank for introducing her to the sport.

“I have been playing hockey since I was five. My two cousins played so I wanted to play too,” she said.

“My aunty and uncle are also involved in hockey and started the Harrington Park Hockey Club.”
