The Bargo Mens Bowling Club had its most successful result ever winning the state finals last week.

Club president Troy Slater said he was proud of the small club that achieved a big result.

They are now the 2017 Bowls NSW State Pennants – Grade 5 champions.

The Pennants competition is a state-based competition with each club represented with three teams of four players.

“I am extremely proud of all the players,” Mr Slater said.

“The men were very excited when we won and a few tears were shed.

“Some people can play bowls for years and never reach this achievement. It is like the NRL grand final for us.

“This was the most successful result in our club’s history since its formation in 1964 and our first ever state level victory.

“It was a huge effort for such a small club of 55 active members against many of the large city clubs that can have more than 300 active bowlers.”

On the way to the final, the club had to win the zone 5 Pennants competition, which included 15 teams.

The club’s played several games during the state finals weekend, which was held at Fingal Bay Bowling Club, before progressing to the final against Beresfield.

“The game was in the balance right up until the very end,” Mr Slater said.

He said the club had a mix of experienced and newer players.

“Some of the men have been playing for 20 plus years and we also have younger competitors who have played for two or three years,” he said.

Mr Slater said “a bunch of blokes turn to play at the Bargo Bowling Club each week” during the club competition.

“We are close mates and we have great team spirit which is what helped us win the state final,” he said.

“There are not many sports where a group of 20 or so men can come together to have a beer, play a competitive game and enjoy each other’s company.”
