Not many businesses can say they played a part in the construction of a fighter jet.
But local business Calm Aluminium can.
The Minto-based company was last night named the 2017 Campbelltown Local Business Award’s Business of the Year.
Director Michael Sutton said it was the first time Calm Aluminium had entered the awards and he admitted it was a shock when the business was announced as the winner of the event’s major award.
“We didn’t expect to win Business of the Year,” he said.
“I remember sitting there thinking we can do this (and when it was announced) I gave a big fist pump.
“It felt amazing to hear our name called out.
“It’s recognition for everyone here that puts in hard work.”
Sales turnover – which the Mr Sutton said had doubled this financial year compared to the year before – are one way to measure the success of the business.
But to be recognised by an entire area reinforced to Mr Sutton that the business was successful.
Despite being named the top business in the area, he said the company would not stop trying to improve.
“We definitely always strive to be better,” he said.
“You always want to improve the business.”
Mr Sutton also said he wanted to take the opportunity to thank all those who voted for Calm Aluminium in this year’s Campbelltown Local Business Awards.
“I’d like to give a big thanks to everyone from the whole team and my dad Laurie, who started the company,” he said.
The specialty business imports and supplies aluminium to a wide range of companies for different uses.
The aluminium was then used in a range of products including fighter jets and aluminium as moulds to shape automotive parts.
“It’s quite a vast industry that we supply to,” Mr Sutton said.
Calm Aluminium was also named Specialised Business of the Year.
Jody White from Family Dental Care was awarded the Business Person of the Year while Aidan McDonagh from Spitfires Bistro was named Youth Business Person of the Year.
The awards – held at Wests Leagues Club Leumeah – were put on by Precedent Productions.
