Indigenous model from Currans Hill to set world on fire

It’s not easy being a model.

Currans Hill’s Guyala ‘Lala’ Bayles gets up at 4am every morning, trains hard and limits her diet to be the best model she can.

But the 17-year-old Aboriginal girl wants more than fame and fortune – she wants to change the world.

“No matter what your skin colour, your culture, your nationality, you should be able to chase your dreams and do what makes you happy,” she said.

“There are definitely barriers in being a person of colour in this industry.

“But I think this is the year for a breakthrough.

“We need more beautiful, unique, diverse men and women – not just pale size six models on the catwalk.”

The new Sydneysider – she moved to Currans Hill from Brisbane on her own just last year – is hoping to make the modelling industry more diverse by competing in the World Supermodel Competition in Macau, China in May.

She is proud to represent not just Australia but the Aboriginal community. Lala is a passionate advocate for her indigenous culture.

She constantly draws inspiration from her family, who she counts as her greatest supporters.

“My inspirations are my mum, my pop and my great-grandmother,” she said. “My grandfather, Tiga Bayles, was well-known is Brisbane as a passionate advocate for black rights and equality.

“Growing up with him, surrounded by that and going to marches was such an inspiration for me.

“One person really can change minds and influence social change.”

Lala said she also admired her mother, who raised three children on her own and still chased her dreams.

“My family has done what they’ve want to do in life and they’ve been happy,” she said.

“They’ve shown me it doesn’t matter if you’re different, if you’re a person of colour. You can’t let anything hold you back.”

Lala needs help raising the funds to make the journey to China to compete in the World Supermodel Competition. She promises to give back to the community and make a difference if she reaches her $6000 goal.
