It was erected a week after a decision was handed down by the NSW Heritage Council’s state heritage register committee to not progress the nomination for state heritage listing.
The committee said that the number of additions to the original house affected the integrity of the fabric of the home.
The decision means that the Minister for Heritage Mark Speakman cannot consider listing Primrose House on the state heritage register without their recommendation.
Dolls Point resident Peter Wells has long campaigned against the sale and said the community wanted the house to stay and be used as something everyone could enjoy.
‘’We want to have the decision deferred until after the new Bayside Council is formed next year,’’ he said.
‘’We were very disappointed with the heritage decision especially since we had more than 1600 people send in letters of support.
‘’It’s not just the local community who love this building, it’s the patients and families who stayed there over the years.’’
Locals have called on the support of Member for Rockdale Steve Kamper who has his own special memories of the house having grown up on Russell Avenue.
‘’I grew up on Russell Avenue so Primrose House has always been a part of my life,’’ he said.
‘’It’s a part of the character of Sans Souci. I can’t imagine a Sans Souci without it.’’
He is also calling on the state government to defer the sale until councillors are elected at Bayside Council in September.
‘’It doesn’t make sense to be selling it. I think the state government is motivated by the maintenance backlog,’’ he said.
‘’The community doesn’t want to lose it. They don’t want to see it get knocked down and replaced with new development.’’
He said the meeting will continue to build momentum against the sale.
‘’We want to find a solution. Doing nothing and saying nothing will mean we get nothing,’’ he said.
The community meeting will be held at the site on Sunday, October 30, from noon to 2pm.
There will also be a free sausage sandwich.
