Plenty of planes but what about the trains?

The roads surrounding Sydney'’s second airport in Badgerys Creek are set to be clogged, Macarthur MP Dr Michael Freelander fears.

Dr Freelander said a meeting with Urban Infrastructure Minister Paul Fletcher had not filled him with confidence that a railway line from the airport to funnel passengers to and from the facility, would be constructed in time for arrival of the first passenger plane.

“He (Mr Fletcher) said they won’t guarantee it will be built but the planning will be done,” he said.

“We need to have the transport in place before it opens and make sure it runs from the airport right through to the city.

“The Minister gave me as much information as he could, and he’s a decent guy, but it’s not good enough to say we are doing the planning for the railway line.

“We have one opportunity to do this well.

“I understand it costs a lot of money but the south west of Sydney has been dudded for too long.

“I want a commitment that the railway line will be open when the airport opens.”

Dr Freelander also had concerns over the Northern Road expansion.

He said the road needed to be three lanes each way, not two, otherwise it would be “congested from the day the airport opens”.

One concept the Labor MP wasn’t opposed to was the airport’s ability to operate 24 hours, seven days a week.

He said in terms of creating local jobs a 24/7 airport was the best option, though he didn’t believe Sydney’s current airport should be subjected to the same conditions.

“The problem with that is it would affect so many more people with (aircraft) noise,” he said.
