Australia's last bushrangers came to notoriety a decade after Ned Kelly, cattle thief, bank robber and folk hero, was hanged. The brothers Patrick and James Kenniff were cattle and horse thieves too. Their gang was said to have been masters over an empire that stretched wider than Kubla Khan's, sheltered and feared by an impoverished and scattered populace of scalpers, shepherds and squatters in territory stretching the breadth of the NSW-Queensland border to Mount Isa.
