FORMER Wallaby Tony Daly hopes to make the Wollondilly White Waratahs bloom this season in their 10th anniversary year.
Daly, a 1991 World Cup-winning Wallaby, will coach the White Waratahs' first grade rugby union team on their return to the Illawarra District Rugby Union competition.
They will face Camden in a local derby at Wire Lane in the competition's second round a challenge Daly is looking forward to.
``It will be seen as a bit of a grudge match, but it's healthy competition and it's needed,'' Daly said. During his career as an Australian representative, Daly played in many major tournaments, including the 1995 World Cup in South Africa, on which the movie Invictus, is based.
As Sydney Harlequins coach last season, Daly saw potential in Wollondilly's line-up in the NSW Suburban Rugby Union Jeffrey Cup competition.
``From what I saw from Wollondilly as opponents last season, the signs are there that it's a good team. They just need some fine tuning,'' Daly said.
``I honestly believe if you have a season in that suburban rugby competition with the quality players there that you will become better.
``The 10th anniversary this season is a great inspiration for the club to succeed. I've already met some of the players and it's been a positive reaction.''
Daly's secret for success is to focus on basic training methods.
Being in the spotlight as Wollondilly coach is a challenge Daly will relish.
``The buck stops with me. I know I have to accept the good with the bad,'' he said.
``I'm just an ingredient for a successful recipe.''
