REVENGE was sweet for Picton, who defeated Thirlmere/Tahmoor 26-12 in the Group 6 Country Rugby League first-grade grand final.
Played under lights at Kirkham Park, the game started with a bang with fists flying in the first minute.
Tempers flared when the Magpies dropped the ball straight from the kick-off, with Picton's Kiel Shepard and the Roosters' Nathan Sutton being sin-binned.
Troy Wozniak was first to score for the Roosters. However, when Leo Dynevor was sin-binned for a professional foul, the Magpies took full advantage, with Nigel Daniels and player-coach Gary Dowse both running in tries to give Picton a half-time lead of 8-6.
In the second half, Jai Taylor went in for another four-pointer in the corner to extend Picton's lead to 14-6. However, Luke Turner hit back with a try for the Roosters, bringing the score back to 14-12.
Ben Digger and Mark Brasington added tries, while Will Dreves kicked crucial conversions from the sideline to seal Picton's win.
Dowse, who was also named man of the match, described the Magpies' performance as a ``massive effort''.
``Everybody in the whole team played great,'' he said.
``It stills feels weird to have won the premiership.
``They looked the better team early in the second half but we started controlling the ball and I think it tired them out.
``We tried not to give them repeat sets so we wouldn't put ourselves under pressure. It was a tough game, but the result speaks for itself.''
It was a disappointing end for Thirlmere/Tahmoor coach Jamie Horner, who will not be coaching next season.
``Picton were just a bit hungrier for the win I think,'' he said.
``We missed a few one-on-ones that led to a couple of tries. It was a bit disappointing with the amount of penalties we had against us. We weren't that undisciplined but the 50-50s didn't seem to go our way.''
Noel Wood will take over the reins at the Roosters next season.
