CAMDEN Rugby Club's first grade team slumped to their seventh straight loss in the Illawarra District Rugby competition on Saturday with a 17-10 defeat against Shoalhaven.
The losses suggest the team are putting in shocking efforts on the field but that's not the case.
A run of bad luck and some refereeing decisions going against them has resulted in the losses and six of their seven defeats have been less than a 10-point margin
In front of their home fans during their Fijian day at Camden, the Rams trailed 7-0 when Shoalhaven's speedy winger flew down the right corridor for a try in the 13th minute.
The Rams hit back with a penalty goal one minute later to trail 7-3 and they lifted when Gavin Holder's try two minutes before half-time gave them a 10-7 lead at the break.
Shoalhaven levelled with a penalty goal in the 50th minute.
Under pressure for most of the second half, the Rams' defence held off Shoalhaven`s successive sets, but an assault on the Rams' line was successful on the third attempt.
The Rams twice held Shoalhaven up over the line.
But even Lee Russell's tough tackling couldn't stop Shoalhaven's pushover try in
the 60th minute to close the scoring.
Camden co-coach Andrew Suffell was frustrated.
``We're defending too much and you can't win games doing that,'' Suffell said.
``We had our opportunities to win, but we just have to be patient when we do have the ball.
``Our game without the ball isn't structured enough.''
Although unhappy with the result, Suffell was pleased with his team's effort. ``I couldn't single out one of the boys that played badly,'' he said.
``I thought they all did well.
``It might have been different if we had a few decisions go our way; but we haven't seemed to be getting our fair share of luck.
``Our goal now, in the second half of the season, is to have a real go at winning our games and reaching the play-offs.''
By agreement, Suffell is sending a video of the game to let the referee review decisions Suffell disagreed with.
