Women shine boots

WOMEN'S soccer is about to hit Macarthur with a bang. Campbelltown Stadium will host two W-League games on Saturday.

Sydney FC, featuring several local players, will take on Newcastle Jets at 4pm and Central Coast Mariners will face Queensland Roar at 6pm in the double-header.

Sydney FC, featuring several local players, including Matilda Heather Garriock, who started out with Leppington Lions, started the season with a 4-0 away win against Perth Glory with Garriock as captain.

Garriock, who is suffering a hip injury and might not play against Newcastle Jets, has urged people to support the local girls on Saturday.

``We've had a brilliant start to the W-League,'' she said. ``Saturday's game against Newcastle should be a great game with the Australian captain Cheryl Salisbury playing for the Jets. If there are any young, aspiring female players out there, they should come to watch it.

``They'll be able to have photos taken with the Macarthur girls after the game.''

The women backed up their win in the opening game with a 2-1 victory against Melbourne in round 2.

Other local players in the Sydney FC squad include Sarah Walsh, Jo Burgess, Leena Khamis and Samantha Spackman.

Khamis, the W-League's top scorer, will hope to add to her tally of four goals this season.

Walsh, who will miss Saturday's match through injury, said the young squad had high expectations and the girls were eager to play well this season. Sydney FC top the ladder despite their shock 3-2 away defeat against Adelaide United on Sunday.
