NARELLAN Jets flew to the top of the Group 6 Country Rugby League ladder with a 32-30 win over Thirlmere/Tahmoor on Sunday.
Leapfrogging the Roosters, who recorded their second consecutive loss, Narellan top the first-grade ladder by just one point, courtesy of their come-from behind victory.
Although he had ruled himself out of the game at Narellan Sportsground earlier in the week, coach Robbie Mears was called into action and proved hard to contain with his constant offloads in tackles.
Pleased with the result and to be leading the competition, Mears knows there are aspects of his team's play which need to be fine-tuned.
``There was plenty of courage and some great work out there,'' Mears said.
``We were a bit undisciplined, giving away penalties and three of their tries came from repeated sets.
``We played with 12 men for 20 minutes of the game with the two sin binned players.
``We can't afford to play like that every week, the referee will never lose the fight, it's always the player that will be penalised.''
Narellan's Ben Baker featured heavily in the game, scoring three tries.
The flying winger opened the scoring in the seventh minute when he sprinted the length of the field for the first try of the game.
But The Roosters hit back to lead 18-12 at the break.
In the second half the Jets concentrated on running down the right wing with Baker adding to his tally with both his second-half tries coming from clever chip-and-chase regathers.
Narellan were always playing catch-up as the half progressed and with time running out they trailed 30-26, but late in the game Shane Milat crossed to level the scores the conversion put his team ahead and sealed the win.
The Roosters put pressure on in the final minutes but the Narellan defensive line held firm.
``It's very hard to beat a team that never gives up and at half-time that's what I told the boys we had to do never give up,'' Mears said.
``Thirlmere is a side that can score points and they did with the weight of possession they had at certain stages in the game.
``They're very good at turning the ball up the inside.''
``But we just tried to stop their quick plays and control the ball more when we had it.''
Mears said the best players for Narellan were Todd Black, Ben Baker, Shane Milat and Ben Takawai.
