WORLD champion boxing sensation Danny Green made a surprise visit to Camden on Sunday to present aspiring boxers from the Camden RSL Youth Club with a trophy.
Young boxers Oska Robertsson-Smith and Adrian Vranic were the inaugural recipients of the Danny Green Fighters Trophy, which was personally presented by the light heavyweight during the weekend.
Club president Ron Skuse said the almost 100 strong crowd went silent as Green delivered a speech to encourage the club's boxing hopefuls reach their goals.
``When he spoke you could hear a pin drop,'' Skuse said.
``We get between 45 to 50 kids from eight years to 25 years of age in one night at the gym.
``We don't push out a lot of fighters but we do keep a lot of kids off the street.''
Green spent more than an hour talking to club members and signed memorabilia including gloves and posters.
He also presented Skuse with a prized set of gloves for his 21 years of voluntary service to the club.
Of trophy recipients Robertsson-Smith and Vranic, Skuse said: ``They love helping out the younger kids in the ring and that's the spirit of the sport.''
Camden deputy mayor Greg Warren, who welcomed Green to the club, said he'd been impressed with his strong message for the young people about taking the right path rather than the easy but weak path of drugs and smoking.
``I remember when I was a young bloke, Tony Mundine came out and I never forgot that,'' he said.
``These kids won't forget the day Danny Green came to town.''
