Wanted: a `mouth of the south'

01 Jul, 2009 05:00 AM
THE idea of a new town crier for Camden is gaining momentum.

Since last week's coverage of calls for a new town crier, the Advertiser has received three nominations of people who could take over the position from the late Barry Feld.

Mr Feld was Camden's original town crier who became a much-loved character who would lead processions and functions with a hollering voice and loud bell.

The first nominee Steve Wisbey of Camden joked that he was willing to challenge anyone else who had been nominated.

``It would be a wonderful opportunity to bring back what the town crier was about because the town crier was about community,'' he said.

Mr Wisbey has been a radio DJ, MC and is the marketing and events co-ordinator with Macarthur Disability Services.

``I have been called `The Mouth of the South' in the past,'' he said. The person who used that name was trying use it a derogatory term, he said, ``but I embraced it and I'm proud of that''.

Camden Advertiser online reader Steve Curtis nominated Alan Flett of Camden, saying: ``I have seen Alan `perform' as a spruiker for joyflights while barnstorming and I am sure he would be most suitable to fill Barry's shoes.''

Mr Flett said he wasn't against the idea of becoming the town crier but said he would need more detail on how much time it would involve.

He agreed that Camden is in need of a new town crier.

``I really enjoyed it when Barry was doing that,'' he said.

``It was really quite fun and funny.''

The third nominee is John Walsh of Camden, who was a good friend of Mr Feld.

But Mr Walsh's employment with Sky Racing and Inglis Property could see his interstate or overseas work clashing with a Camden event.

``So at this stage I will have to go to the `reserve bench' and wish the new town crier, whoever he or she may be, good luck and be proud of representing the best town in Australia,'' he said.

I'm a Campbelltonian, so technically I don't get a say. But... Surely there is no one in Camden... nay Macarthur...nay Australia... whose voice at full throttle compares with the magnifical octave onslaught of the one and only Mr Steve Wisbey?????
