Walk today to help buy prosthetics

22/06/2008 9:38:00 AM
SARAH Hilt is a survivor. Despite losing both legs, her left forearm and the fingers on her right hand to meningococcal disease, Miss Hilt is looking towards a bright future.

A quadruple amputee, Miss Hilt is hoping to soon be fitted for prosthetics in a bid to become more independent.

But the cost for prosthetics is high and the Hilt family, through the Sarah Hilt Foundation, has organised a fund-raising walk to raise $120,000 for Miss Hilt's artificial limbs.

The new hand, which will offer Miss Hilt individual movement in each finger, and the computerised knee that will adjust to the terrain and her speed, will give her a level of mobility she hasn't experienced since meningococcal disease ravaged her body almost four years ago.

Miss Hilt went from being a first-year university student one day to being a patient in a coma the next.

She underwent many operations and skin grafts during her nine-month stay in hospital. She returned home to Theresa Park in 2005 and resumed her studies in 2006.

She is on dialysis four times a day and is awaiting a kidney transplant.

The Walk for Sarah today (Sunday, June 22) will help pay for Sarah's new prosthetics.

The 5km walk starts at Camden Showground at 10am. Registration starts at 9am. Adults $20 and $40 for families.

Details: 0404852772.

My kids go to Cobbitty school where Sarah was once the school captain. My kids pray for Sarah every single night around our dinner table. We feel her pain and suffering and know that strength of character is built on pain overcoming adversity. Our admiration is strong. The Harvey-Marks family of Orangeville
