Vote on school

21 May, 2008 02:49 PM
DEBATE has raged for more than seven months: thousands of opinions, letter and emails. Hundreds of pages of printed words, countless hours of footage captured and broadcast across Sydney.

And pictured here, more than 3000 submissions presented to Camden Council.

But in less than a week, the drama that has put Camden in the national spotlight could be all over.

If all goes to plan, Camden's nine councillors will decide the fate of the proposal to build an Islamic school in Camden this Tuesday night, May 27.

The Camden Advertiser broke the story of the Islamic school application and will be there until the end.

Keep an eye on our website in the coming days for breaking news in the lead-up to the decision.

Watch our website on Tuesday night for live updates from the council meeting.

I think it's disgusting that this should even be a proposition. Our schools should be good enough for Muslim or any other ethnic race. If Muslims choose to live in the country then they need to send their children to our schools, otherwise there was no point in making this country their own

The Qur'an expresses such radically differing views from out democratic society based on Judeo Christian, secular principles. Hatred and discrimination against others have no place in Australian society - and the Qur'an is replete with it- not to mention that its principles contravene those of our education system. Ordinary people are against the school - not extremists - just ordinary citizens who can sense the danger in the proposal. Why go backwards as regards womens' rights, discrimination, slavery, pluralism and all that characterises western society? Shariah law is just a bag of horrors despite all the disinformation about it. Ask the women in Pakistan, Iran and Saudi Arabia. Our way of life - a tolerant, pluralistic one - is worth defending against discriminatory Islam.

This is a response to Skye - I don't know where you got your Islamic education from but I havnt read anything in islamic text that promotes hatred and discrimination against others. Dont worry about what you see in terms of Muslim behaviour - muslims are afterall just people. Look to Islam itself and you will be surprised as to how non-discriminatory it actually is.

Response to Chamsie... Obvious you have not read any Islamic texts, then. Try the Quran (Infidels are lower than animals in the sight of Allah) or better yet, read the so-called "authentic" traditions (hadith) about the life and words of Mohammad. Maybe, in your opinion, the countless narratives about raid after raid, attack after attack, plunder, killing, enslavement, torture and rape of non-Muslims by Islam's prophet does not promote hatred and discriminastion -- and violence -- againstnon-Muslims. Remember these things were written by Mohammad's friends and followers, not his enemies. Also consider that Mohammad is considered a great moral example by Muslims. Figure out, if you can, what that means. kactuz
