WOMAN power is alive and well in Macarthur, thanks to a group of like minded businesswomen looking to make a difference.
Members of the Zonta Club of Macarthur have taken the group's ethos ``advancing the status of women'' to make a mark on the lives of women around the world.
The project's members have been involved in from making birthing kits for women in remote countries to breast-care packs for cancer patients in Camden has helped attract more volunteers.
Publicity officer and former president Lorraine Wilson said she joined Zonta ``because it was working for the advocacy of women''.
``Zonta really works for women in the Macarthur district,'' she said.
And that includes the Camden Survivors of Breast Cancer group which has been on the receiving end of the Zonta volunteers' generosity.
Zonta members turned out in force recently to make more than 100 breast care cushions for women and men who have undergone surgery for breast cancer.
``We get some lovely letters back from women who have received them,'' Mrs Wilson said.
The same volunteers also turned out for a birthing kit assembly workshop where they packed plastic sheeting, soap, gloves and scalpels into kits to send to Afghanistan.
``Half a million women die in childbirth overseas. These kits are saving women's lives,'' Mrs Wilson said.
The Zonta club is for women who own a business or are in an executive position.
It is open to women from all over Macarthur.
Mrs Wilson said she joined Zonta eight years ago as secretary and soon after was elected president.
``There are many fabulous clubs people can volunteer for. I chose Zonta because I liked the fact that it was working for the advocacy of women but everyone will have a niche somewhere.''
