 Soul searching begins for Pat

Soul searching begins for Pat

24 Nov, 2007 10:39 AM
"I don't know what more you have to do to please people." Those were the words from Macarthur Liberal MP Pat Farmer on Saturday night as he found voters had turned away from him in droves.

"I'm only human - I'm incredibly disappointed," Mr Farmer told the Advertiser, after finding his 61 per cent hold on the seat slashed to 50.18 per cent on Saturday night.

"To think that someone can be in the job for six years and somebody else comes into the job for six weeks and there is a huge amount of people thinking that this guy should be looking after the area federally - it just makes me rethink the whole scenario.

"I'd like to think that I've done a good job for people around this area.

"Are they voting for substance or just a name or just a trend?

"Do the things that you put in and the lifestyle - I've been away from home for half the year - is it really all worthwhile?

"I just find it unbelievable.

"I am just flabbergasted with the results."

Mr Farmer said he had visited about 15 booths today and the voters he had spoken to had been supportive and positive.

He had heard from Liberal scrutineers that there had been a large number of informal votes, but he believed that would have robbed all candidates of votes, not only him.

Mr Farmer described the Labor campaign on industrial relations as "effective and misleading" and said the Liberal advertising had been unable to "get the real facts out there".

He thanked his staff and supporters.

For a full wrap-up of the election, see this Wednesday's Camden Advertiser.

What an arrogant thing to say.

If Pat Farmer doesn't think that local voters should have a say in whether he represents them or not he should get out of politics and go work somewhere else.

Pat has treated Macarthur as a seat he owns during this whole campaign. If such a massive swing doesn't make him see that he doesn't have ownership over a seat in Parliament I don't know what will.

Pat sounds like a child who feels he has not been praised enough.

Sorry Pat if your ego has not been stroked sufficiently, but if the game is too tough for you, then perhaps you should follow your leader and consider getting out of it.

And I'm not sure the electors of Macarthur will appreciate, nor forget your "what's wrong with you people?" view.

What has Mr Bleasdale done for our community? I don't even know who he is or what he represents.

Maybe now that Labor has got in and they are fixing up the hospitals, Mr Farmer can push for Camden Hospital to be reopened. Having to travel to Campbelltown is ridiculous and Geoff Corrigan certainly hasn't helped us any.

I would vote for Pat any day.

Hi Pat, the reason you didn't get my vote was My wife and I asked for your help with a Centrelink enquiry 7 Times we contacted you and your staff, each occasion you would get back to us. Not once do you or your staff bother to contact us. Even if you couldn't help it would have been nice to hear something. Sorry mate if you can't communicate with people why should we bother. Cheers Jeffrey from Bradbury

Several weeks ago, Pat was quoted in this paper as saying that he'd win Macarthur.

Now he's shocked at the extent of the swing against him - the biggest in NSW. He clearly has no idea why this happened - and probably never will.

Pat has participated in the removal of workers' rights, the failure to take responsible action on climate change, tax cuts which have gone disproportionately to the rich, the decision to participate in the illegal invasion of Iraq, detention of hapless refugees and their children, the neglect of our public education, health and transport systems, and irrational fear campaigns against minority groups. I could go on...

How's that for a start, Pat?

This is an unbelievably arrogant comment by Mr Farmer.

He is a Parliamentary member of the Liberal Party. If he doesn't want to be held accountable for what he does as a member of the Liberal Party, he should resign and stand as an independent.

As a member of the Liberal Party, he voted for and advocated the WorkChoices legislation, which has been widely and rightly believed responsible for a large part of the swing against the Liberal Government of John Howard.

If Mr Farmer didn't believe in WorkChoices, he should have voted against it. If he believes in it, he must accept the voters decision.

This sort of dummy spitting behaviour is not appropriate for someone who aims to represent constituents in the national Parliament.

I am amazed that Pat Farmer was so surprised by the swing against him. I suppose if he actually listened to peoples concerns instead of brushing them off then he would have been more prepared. I spoke to Pat at the Catholic Club on Melbourne Cup day. I told him that my husband had his own business and we didn't want to rip off our employee by putting him on a AWA because later someone would do it to our children. He didn't care though. He just told me that there would be more jobs for my children when they grew up, and I told him they would be at less pay and without entitilements. I told him my children would never be able to afford to buy a house if these AWAs were allowed to continue but he once again passed the blame onto the state government by telling me how much state government tax had to be paid when buying a house. What about the GST on new houses Pat? I really think if he is so oblivious to people in his electorates values then it should be good ridance to Pat.
