School redevelopment welcome

20/08/2008 11:44:00 AM
THE redevelopment of the old Camden High School site has been welcomed by Camden's business and historical groups.

AEH Group, which owns the site, is seeking council permission to construct 16 buildings, including a motel, restaurant, arts centre, medical centre, function venue, 159 housing units and a 79-bed residential care hostel.

Camden Chamber of Commerce president Miriam Roberts said the chamber worked to promote business in the area.

``The chamber supports proposals that are done in a correct and cohesive manner with the business and general community,'' she said. ``The chamber views the development of the old high school site as an opportunity for the future promotion and advancement of local business and the community generally.

``The chamber is looking forward to a presentation in the near future of the proposed development by the developer to able to ask more questions and gain more insight into this landmark development.''

Camden Historical Society president Ian Willis said the school had ``social significance'' but that there was no historical significance to the buildings on the old high school site.

I live in the central Camden area and agree that appropriate development of the old high school site is a good thing. I also agree that with the population of south western Sydney growing that residential development is appropriate. My concern is the form of the development which is being proposed. What is proposed is a collection of 3 to 4 storey buildings which I think will be totally out of character with the town of Camden. Even the council's own Town Centre Strategy limits building heights to 2 to 3 storey. As well as high-rise buildings not being visually appropriate I am also concerned about the impact on traffic in the central area of Camden and the approaches to the town. Let's not focus on whether or not development should occur on the site, but think seriously about whether the development should take the form of high density, high-rise development in the middle of Camden.
