Quranic Society will fight in court

27/05/2008 9:25:00 PM
The Quranic Society has vowed to take their fight to court, following Camden councillors' rejection of their Islamic school proposal at tonight's council meeting.

Quranic Society vice-president Issam Obeid told the Advertiser: ''We're definitely going to appeal through the Land and Environment Court.''

Another member of the society, Ahmed Halal, said it was disappointing that Camden residents had made it clear they did not want Muslims in the area.

"If you build a school, then you're building education and you're building something for society,'' he said.

I disagree with the concept of religioius schools whether christian, jewish or islamic or any other. I think schools such as these actually contribute to each person feeling their religion is superior. Religion is actually about beliefs and not fact. I am against the government funding going to any religious school, irrespective of faith. Faith can be taught by families or in out of school activities. I do however respect peoples beliefs provided they do not inflict them on me. I see no problem with prayer rooms etc being established in schools so those with beliefs can pray. Provided those rooms are avaiilable to any religious denomination. I am Australian and I ashamed of the more racist remarks made by my compatriots.

The next logical step is for the Quranic society to be civil in defeat of the proposal as it stands. They should listen to the views of the local residents about traffic problems. They should then resubmit an amended proposal with the non-racist criticisms implemented. Then submit all the way to the higher echelons of our legal systems. Seriously, if the Camden residents are displaying good Christian behaviour, the Muslims will probably chose to retain Islam.

You would think that with such a high level of support against the school, particularly on planning grounds, that the group would go away, but no clearly not. One minute they say it is an islamic school and the next it's a school for everyone.. which is it? There is not a high demand for an islamic school in Camden and with a currently declining population in the town together with declining enrollments, it seems stupid to waste money on an educational facility that is not needed or wanted by the community.

The issue is not whether we believe the school is needed. It is clearly needed, just as are the many other schools catering for these people. There is in fact a strong Muslim presence in the south west of Sydney approaching Campbelltown, from Lvierpool, and this points in the southwest towards Camden. You don't want Muslims in Annangrove, you don't want them in the north shore, you don't want them in enclaves, you don't want them in Australia full-stop. We need to think broadly at where we want them, or rather whether we want them at all.

Even though I'm not of a particular religion I believe there is a need for religious schools, the core of all religions is acceptance, tolorence and at least in Islam non-violence. This community needs a lesson in all these. The world is shaking their head at Australia today, we need to get in touch. I work at a American school in Marrakech, Morocco, living here I have never seen such peaceful, kind, accepting muitcultural society, I wish I could say the same about Australia. Shame on you Camden.

I live in Bury near Manchester UK. Imagine the surprise of local people here when last September The Times (London) newspaper revealed that the Darul Uloom Islamic college which is situated here was a leader of Deobandi (extremist Muslim) teachings and that the students are taught that they should "view their adopted country...with unremitting hostility". Watch out Australia! As the grandfather of a five-year-old Aussie I hope Australians will protect their freedoms.

It is important to not use well trodden cliches, double speak, and illegitimate political tools when dealing with this problem. Insincerity is usually very obvious. Any one in management of any sort knows that council can use its own legal rhetoric to hide the 'more unacceptable and widespread' views of its voting citizens in coming to this decision. The problem is that if you don't want the school you are voting against the people of that faith belonging to your society. These Muslims are already in Australia. What on earth is expected of them, conversion, eating of pork, drinking of alcohol?? Must they be like the rest of us to be acceptable humans? Even they have 5 year old grandchildren Mr "rupesgranpa". Even Christians and atheists have extremist and violent members in their midst causing trouble. Traffic accidents and alcohol will cause you more harm than any Muslim. Get a real perspective on this. A human and global one. This is 2008..!

I was born in Australia although I come from a Maltese (Catholic) background. I chose to accept Islam and become Muslim more than 7 years ago. Most Muslims are ordinary people just like me. They go to school or work and just want to get on with their life without feeling like they dont belong. The nasty racist comments from Camden residents is dividing the community - it is making it a situation of US and THEM and this is very destructive. I know many Aussie born Muslims just like me who are really hurt by all this nonsense. We were born here and we will live here and we will study here and eventually we will die here - where we belong - in our home that we love - Australia!!!

Muslims have created their own reputation. It is no use saying "Look We muslims are normal people like everyone else we have good and bad" except that the bad muslims have proved to be cowardly murders thus present an unaccepable risk

In my experience from Non-Muslim country (in the past) and now going to be Muslim country (Indonesia). When Muslim community is small, they intent to say "discrimination" against their community, BUT when the community is getting BIGGER (majority) then they will ask others to follow their way of life. Why can't Muslim people follow the way Australian life? Indonesia was not a Muslim country, however it will be Muslim country soon or later. It is quite scary when a religion is getting strong and trying to change the Country law/constitution. I have several friends recently moved permanently to Australia, we don't know what is going to happen if Islamic law is enforced/in place. What I know is, there is master plan to make Indonesia becoming Muslim country. It is well plan !! Just let you know in part of Indonesia, the street/road name is in Arabic already. In some areas/province we can't have/stored drink contained alcohol! (muslim can't drink alcohol) It is true that it sounds like small issue, many people say, hmmm it's only "law" we can ignore it for now. BUT the law already in place, it means they already started the movement to make Indonesia becoming Muslim country soon or later. Sometimes people in general will not realise there are people out there want to make Australia becoming Muslim country. it is all start from a small things.
