THE Cullen family of Harrington Park will put their best feet forward on Sunday in a bid to find a cure for the chronic disease that affects their four-year-old son.
Family and friends of Melanie and Matt Cullen hope each step along the five-kilometre fund-raiser walk at Parramatta Park will bring them closer to a cure for type 1 diabetes which Will has bravely battled since he was two.
So far the Cullens have raised $870 but hope to reach $5000 by the time they complete Sunday's Walk to Cure Diabetes.
The Advertiser followed the family's valiant effort last year when they raised a staggering $17,000 for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
They raised the most amount for a family team and won the T-shirt competition for their striking Superman style shirts bearing a W for Will and for the team's name, Will's Warriors.
That is how the Cullens describe their son as he contends with unsteady blood sugar levels that fluctuate from 2 to 23.
To stabilise his sugar, Will receives a constant supply of insulin through a pump which he has named Thomas after his last one, Percy, broke.
``Will's sugar levels are as unstable as ever and he gets upset more and more,'' Mrs Cullen said.
She described Will's condition as demanding because his sugar levels need to be checked regularly, even during the night as he sleeps.
``He wishes they would find a cure so he can have an apple juice a day and some days he wants to share his diabetes with his friends,'' Mrs Cullen said. ``We just keep trying to get on top of it.''
