CAMDEN Council has backed new laws to increase the safety of backyard swimming pools.
Camden Council development and environment director Sue Morris said the council supported changes to the Swimming Pools Act 1992 in an endeavour to reduce tragic accidents.
Ms Morris said the changes allowed the council to act immediately to ensure that more than 4000 swimming pools in Camden were made safe.
However, she said ``at the end of the day parental supervision will cut backyard drownings''.
With drowning as the leading cause of accidental death in children, Local Government Minister Barbara Perry said ``the community wants sensible action''.
