Pleasure of giving to mums and babes

18/04/2008 9:02:10 AM
MORE than 100 mother-and-baby packs are on their way to Papua New Guinea in the hope of encouraging women to give birth in hospital.

The Camden Country Women's Association (CWA) has been collecting the packs with the help of volunteers and the Camden Lioness and Camden Ladies Probus clubs.

Eva Campbell, president of the local CWA, said this was the second bunch of packs to be sent to Sydney where they will be shipped to Madang and Kundiawa Provincial hospitals.

"They're trying to encourage women to come from the countryside to the hospital to have their babies," Mrs Campbell said.

"The gift packs are a big incentive to get them to come in.

"I know [Camden] is a special community but it was an overwhelming response for which I'm extremely grateful."

UN statistics reveal one in 12,500 Australian women will die giving birth as opposed to one in 333 women in Papua New Guinea.

Helen Robinson, of Camden South, has been busy putting together mother-and-baby packs that include cloth nappies, a newborn outfit, bunny rug, underwear, sanitary pads, soap and nighties.

She has been responsible for 73 packs in the past year.

"I've got enough, my grandchildren have got enough," she said.

"To think of young women and little children who've got nothing it's so nice to contribute to people in need.

"Nerilee, my granddaughter, is my assistant in doing all this charity work. It's the highlight of her life. She'll be 11 soon."

Mrs Robinson has also made 288 gift-filled shoeboxes for the Samaritan's Purse to give to children in some of the poorest areas in the world. "I don't feel it's an effort. I just feel it's a pleasure."
