Plea for more parking in Camden

Plea for more parking in Camden

17 Mar, 2010 02:10 PM
AN Argyle Street business owner says Camden needs extra parking and needs it now.

Tina Vella's comments come after a Camden Advertiser article on February 10 which said there were 22 empty shops from the top of Argyle Street to Target.

``More parking will bring more people (and) more people means more shops will open,'' the Oakdale resident, 30, said.

Mrs Vella, who has worked in the main street for six years, says she has to get to work before 8.30am or all the all-day parking spots are taken, and she has to move her car every three hours.

``I carry 10 kilograms of towels every single day to work. I need to park close to my shop,'' she said. ``(But) we can't punish business owners and we can't punish the consumer by fining people for parking in Camden.

``We need to come to some solution so everyone's happy but it needs to be done now. ''

She said parking wasn't an issue in Narellan, ``and it shouldn't be an issue in Camden''.

Mrs Vella, who will write to mayor Chris Patterson and Macarthur MP Pat Farmer about the problem, suggested the McDonald's site would have been ideal for a car park or she would welcome an underground car park.

Cr Patterson said he did not disagree with Mrs Vella regarding peak-hour times, but more parking was not economically viable.

``The last time we looked at it, another 80 or 90 spots behind John/Murray street (car park) would cost $4-5million that's $4-5million that something else has to give,'' he said.

Camden Chamber of Commerce president Miriam Roberts said Narellan Town Centre was privately owned and therefore provided its own car parking.

She agreed that Camden needed more easy access parking for shoppers.

``But as it has been identified in the Camden Town Centre Parking Survey September 2009, there is a fair bit of all day parking around the town centre,'' she said. ``Maybe some people aren't aware of where they can park.''

Parking is not a major issue in Narellan as the majority of its shops are in one central area. Camden is spread out along a much wider area and there are residential properties scattered throughout. The other major issue is that parking was not a problem when a lot of our buildings were build (some are very old). Each parking space that a worker in a shop takes up near their shop in order to not walk, is a potential customer lost. Customers love being able to pull up out the front and duck in to do whatever they need to. Perhaps Ms Vella could park close to her shop, offload the towels and move to all day parking. Sure its inconvenient, but at least that is a space that is not being taken up and available to customers, who may spend money in her shop. Perhaps Council could tar an area at Bicentennial Park or something and run a peak hour shuttle bus up and down the main street and back from say 8-9.30 and 3.30-5.30 in the afternoon. It would alleviate parking in the main street and people could be dropped quite close to their workplaces and returned at the end of the day. It would be much more affordable than to extend the John Street/Murray Street parking.

Take out one lane each way through Argyle street, thus reducing the speed limit at the same time, which can't be a bad thing. Make angle car spaces of the removed lanes. Possibly widen the pavement, thus allowing more outside eating areas. The town would become more pedestrian, and the other roads can cope with through traffic.

Great idea Tim! That would be even more cost effective than the bus idea, and can't be too hard for council to implement, at a minimum its paint and advertisements to let people know. There's no need for anyone to be racing through town anyway diving between lanes, and if it can be more user friendly for everyone, then why not make it angle parking, that works well on John Street, so why not the main street as well.

I agree that Tim's idea will bring much needed relief to parking problems, however, imagine the increase in congestion generated by cars continuously entering and exiting car spots on Argyle street with only 1 lane. Please remember, vehicles will need room to leave a car spot and enter back onto the main road, possibly causing traffic disruptions during 5-5.30pm. Just try driving through High Street, Penrith at 5.00pm with its single lane, you'll instantly know what I mean.
