SMOKING at playgrounds and sporting fields would bring a $110 fine under a Camden Council draft policy that is now on public exhibition.
The fine would apply within 10 metres of playgrounds, bus shelters, playing fields, swimming pools and entry doors to council buildings.
Last night councillors voted to put the draft Outdoor Smoke-Free Areas Policy on exhibition to get public feedback.
An officer's report to the council stated that as evidence mounted to show the harmful effect of passive smoking ``community attitudes towards smoking have changed''.
``It's proposed that in the interests of the health of our local community and environment, the council adopt an outdoor smoke-free policy,'' the report stated.
The smoking ban would not apply to people on the footpaths because it would be ``too restrictive'' but that could change if residents ``indicate a strong desire'' for such a smoking ban after the public exhibition of the policy.
