A CHANCE meeting with a young girl in dire need of a double organ transplant has prompted a Harrington Park boy to encourage people to become organ donors.
Brody Harvey-Marks, 12, has organised an information evening at Cobbitty Public School next Thursday to raise awareness about Australia's low donation rates and the need for people to discuss registering as donors.
"You are 20 times more likely to have to receive an organ than donate one," Brody said.
"It is so important to sit down with your family and discuss becoming a donor.
"There are many people who need to receive an organ and once you are dead, you don't need yours any more."
When Brody was elected vice-captain of Cobbitty Public School this year, he said he wanted his badge "to mean something".
So when he met a girl at a family barbecue and heard she was on a waiting list for a heart and lung transplant, Brody decided to campaign for more organ donors.
"I didn't want my badge to be just a shiny thing I wear."
Next week's information night at the school will include speeches from organ donors and recipients who have all commended Brody's initiative. There will also be a surprise visit from a celebrity ambassador.
Brody said the night was an opportunity to learn more about organ donation, hear triumphant stories and highlight the need to start discussing organ donation with your family.
