Love for his girl grows stronger

Love for his girl grows stronger

01 Jul, 2009 05:00 AM
WHEN Noel Winton spotted Edna Quigley at a Saturday night dance in Camden one balmy evening in 1945, he knew she was the one.

``I can still remember it now,'' he said.

``The girls were sitting by the wall, the boys were standing at the door and when the music started you would dive for the one you wanted.''

Noel, 88, made a beeline for Edna and the two have been inseparable ever since.

``We've had a good time,'' said Noel of the couple's marriage, which has lasted more than 60 years.

``We had a row now and again, but that's what marriage is all about.

``You've got to give and take and always think of what the other person wants.''

The Wintons will celebrate their 64th wedding anniversary in October, a milestone that has inspired the couple's two sons and six grandchildren. They also have two great-grandchildren.

Daughte r-in-law Noeline Winton said: ``Their love is as strong today if not more than the first time they met.''

She said she hoped that sharing the couple's love story would cheer Edna, who was recently admitted into a nursing home, where Noel visits her every day just as he did during the nine months he courted her after meeting at the Empire Hall dance.

At the end of his shift on the railway, Noel would cycle 10 kilometres every day from his home in Kenny Hill to Camden to see Edna.

``I would get home at eight o'clock and go and see my girl,'' he said.

They married at St John's Church on October 20, a day Noel described as ``beautiful just gorgeous''.

They spent their weekends building a house in Warby Street, Campbelltown, where they lived for the next 30 years and where they raised two sons.

The family would drive to the coast for a weekend of fishing and Edna's prowess as an angler made an impression on Noel, who still boasts of the 15 pound flathead she once caught. He had it embalmed and it hangs on the wall of their home in Nambucca Heads, where they moved 12 years ago to be closer to their children.

Of their almost 64-year marriage, Noel said: ``It's colossal. If I could do it all again, I wouldn't change a thing.''
